Grado is very popular at Christmas time for those who want to experience the festivities in a unique atmosphere! The "Island of the Sun" is beautiful in itself: it has a large pedestrian area and an old town center with many shops, bars, and a characteristic Y-shaped harbor. During the Christmas season, however, the small fishing village transforms into the "Island of Christmas" thanks to the lights, atmosphere, and numerous events organized by the municipality each year. The most eagerly awaited initiative is certainly the nativity scene exhibition, which has become a shared tradition with Aquileia and Terzo di Aquileia. From December to January, more than 100 representations of the Nativity can be seen in the calli and campielli of the island's historic center and in the streets of Fossalon and Boscat. Finally, there is a very characteristic event in the port of Mandracchio: every year on January 5th, from 5 p.m., the fearsome Varvuole (sea witches) arrive in the port to drive away the negativity and, with their strength and energy, contribute to a positive start to the new year.
